Hello to “Mayberry” from the family of Judi Hyatt. Judi
ended her brave battle with pancreatic cancer on June 26, 2009. We
would like, on her behalf, to post a final column on the Waynesboro website,
the place she came to 11 years ago, the place she came to call home.
I know that Judi would have been anticipating a bright 4th
of July celebration and wishing you all good weather, hotdogs and potato
salad, fireworks, flags and family. We wish you all of these things too!
You may have heard the brief story of a man, thinking of
moving to a new town, asks a resident what the people are like there. The man
asks: “How are they where you live?” The man replies: “Miserable, rude
and unfriendly.” The resident of the town says: “Well, you’ll find
pretty much the same thing here.” A few days later, another person, thinking
of making the same move, asks the same question: “What are the people like
here?” The same resident asks: “What are the people like where you live?”
The man answers: “Oh, they are so nice, warm and friendly and so welcoming!”
The man replies: “That’s pretty much what you will find here too.”
To those of you who knew Judi, you knew which category she
was in. For those of you who only knew her only through this website, you
could easily tell how she saw the world.
We came to know Waynesboro through Judi’s lens. The rich
history and architecture, the quiet and stunning beauty of its mountains and
valleys and the fabric of daily life in Waynesboro became familiar to us.
Though most of us live in upstate New York our early roots were set in the
sandy soil of Maryland, a few hours from your town, the town that Judi called
“Mayberry.”
Our family traveled extensively growing up in the military,
and lived in various states and Europe. Judi’s travels continued when she
married into the Navy, across more states and Asia. Wherever life took her,
she found beauty and magic, because she had those qualities inside her.
Her journey brought her to Waynesboro where she found peace
and contentment, and so many beautiful people. It has been a privilege and joy
to meet and get to know you. God bless you all!
I would like to end this with an excerpt from Judi’s last
published column from May with her words to you:
“Until next time, be good to yourself, smile a lot, tell
those folks you love that you love them a lot. It’s been my pleasure to
connect with you again. Hugs, Jude.”
